Insecurity: IGP assures of improvement in welfare of men and officers, retired personnel

Abuja, Nigeria – Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Olukayode Egbetokun has reaffirmed the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to prioritizing the welfare of serving officers, retirees, and families of deceased personnel.

Speaking during a cheque presentation ceremony in Abuja, the IGP disbursed a total of ₦2.17 billion to 1,574 beneficiaries and next-of-kin of fallen officers under the Group Life Assurance and IGP Welfare Scheme. The payments covered policy years between 2015 and 2025, including longstanding claims recovered from previous administrations.

Egbetokun described the gesture as part of a broader welfare reform agenda, stressing that it goes beyond statutory responsibility.

“This is more than a statutory duty; it is a sacred trust – a trust to ensure that the memory of our departed officers remains alive and their families are not left behind,” the IGP said.

He disclosed that since assuming office as the 22nd Inspector-General of Police, the Force has disbursed a cumulative ₦24.2 billion to 9,735 families of deceased officers across the country.

The police chief assured that ongoing reforms are designed to make welfare support stronger, transparent, and more responsive. These reforms include digitizing processes to ensure faster access to entitlements and eliminating bureaucratic bottlenecks that previously delayed payments.

While presenting cheques to 20 families of deceased officers in person, Egbetokun acknowledged the sacrifices of their loved ones and extended heartfelt condolences. He emphasized that while monetary compensation cannot replace the lives lost, it represents a symbol of gratitude and a pledge of continued support.

The IGP commended the Insurance Unit of the Nigeria Police Force for their diligence in facilitating the claims and appreciated President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Ministry of Police Affairs for their support in sustaining welfare initiatives.

Beneficiaries of this latest phase included the families of late DSP Peter Sunday, ASP Lucky Danladi, Insp. James Tase, ASP Ibrahim Ango, ASP Musa Abdullahi, ASP Ape Louis, Insp. Lydia Shuaibu, Insp. Buba Nasada, Insp. Sanusi Abubakar, Insp. Obeche Martin, Insp. Pascal Ahmed, and ASP Sumaila Abubakar, among others.

Egbetokun assured that the Force remains committed to ensuring that no family of a deceased officer is left unattended or forgotten in the ongoing welfare reform.
