IRANIAN RED CRESCENT FILES ICC COMPLAINT, ACCUSES US AND ISRAEL OF WAR CRIMES IN CIVILIAN ATTACKS

The Iranian Red Crescent Society has formally called on the International Criminal Court (ICC) to open an investigation into alleged war crimes linked to recent military strikes that reportedly hit civilian infrastructure in Iran.

In a letter dated March 7, 2026, addressed to the ICC prosecutor in The Hague and shared on social media, the humanitarian organisation alleged that attacks carried out by the United States and Israel struck residential neighbourhoods and humanitarian facilities across Iran.

The document, submitted under international humanitarian law provisions, asked the court to launch a criminal examination into the reported attacks.

According to the letter, the organisation made the request as part of its humanitarian responsibilities and in reliance on the principles governing armed conflict.

The Iranian Red Crescent said its appeal was based on field reports from relief workers, operational records, and data collected by the organisation after the attacks.

It alleged that several civilian facilities were either deliberately targeted or struck indiscriminately during the operations.

“According to field reports from relief workers, operational documentation, and data recorded by the Iranian Red Crescent Society, a wide range of residential areas, medical facilities, schools, humanitarian facilities, vital urban infrastructure, and public places were directly or indiscriminately targeted,” the letter stated.

Figures compiled by the organisation claim that at least 6,668 civilian structures were damaged during the attacks. Among them, 5,535 residential buildings were destroyed or damaged, while 1,041 commercial properties were also affected.

The report further said 14 medical centres and 65 schools suffered damage, raising concerns about the potential impact on healthcare services and education in the affected areas.

The organisation also reported that 11 of its facilities were hit during the attacks. In addition, three emergency response vehicles were damaged, while seven relief workers from the Iranian Red Crescent were killed or injured.

The group said the incidents raise serious concerns under international humanitarian law, which prohibits attacks on civilian infrastructure and humanitarian personnel during armed conflicts.

It urged the ICC prosecutor to review the evidence and determine whether the reported incidents amount to war crimes.

According to the organisation, the request is part of its broader responsibility to protect civilians and humanitarian workers during conflicts and to promote accountability for violations of international law.
