“It Was the Work of Shaytan”: Sheikh Gumi Reacts to Maryam Sanda’s Reduced Jail Term

Controversial Islamic cleric, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, has expressed support for the reduction of Maryam Sanda’s death sentence to a 12-year jail term, describing her actions as a result of “Shaytan’s influence.”

Maryam Sanda, who was convicted in 2020 for the murder of her husband, Bilyaminu Bello, had initially been sentenced to death. However, President Bola Tinubu recently reviewed her punishment, citing “compassionate grounds in the interest of her children.”

In a statement released by the President’s media aide, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu clarified that while Sanda’s presidential pardon was revoked, her sentence was reduced to 12 years in prison instead.

Reacting via Facebook, Sheikh Gumi said Sanda’s remorse after committing the crime shows that her act was driven by Shaytan (Satan) and not premeditated malice.

“They said she stabbed him, then broke down crying over his body. Do you understand? That is the work of Shaytan,” Gumi wrote.

He added that the forgiveness extended by the victim’s family was both lawful and spiritually commendable in Islam.

“When the family of the victim forgives, it is not weakness — it is mercy. Mercy is more beloved to Allah than vengeance,” he explained.

“Maryam Sanda’s execution would not have been the right solution. The presidential pardon she received was the correct one. In Islam, justice is about balance and compassion, not anger.”

The cleric’s comments come amid public outrage over Sanda’s inclusion on the presidential pardon list, which was later revised following widespread criticism.

Many Nigerians condemned the sentence reduction, describing it as an act that “rewards criminality.”
