‘It’s Not Your Father’s House’: Shehu Sani Urges Nigerians With Revoked US Visas to Return Home

Former Kaduna Central Senator, Shehu Sani, has advised Nigerians and other African nationals whose US visas have been revoked to return to their home countries.

In a post shared on X (formerly Twitter) on Monday, Sani cautioned that no matter how comfortable life abroad may seem, it can never replace one’s home country.

He wrote: “Nigerians and other thousands of Africans whose visas were recently revoked by President Trump should hasten and leave the country and return home before they get arrested by ICE. No matter how long you live in the comfort of your adopted home, you will someday be reminded that it’s not your father’s house.”

His comments follow reports that President Donald Trump’s administration has revoked over 80,000 visas since January 2025 — more than double the total from the previous year.

According to a report released by the US State Department, the revoked visas include 16,000 linked to drunk driving, 12,000 for assault, and 8,000 student visas. Other reasons cited include connections to terrorism, criminal activity, public safety threats, and visa overstays.

Although the US government did not disclose the affected nationalities, an earlier statement in August confirmed that over 6,000 Nigerian student visas were cancelled for overstays and legal violations, with a few cases tied to alleged support for terrorism.

In July, the US Embassy also introduced new visa rules for Nigerians, including shorter validity periods and enhanced screening procedures requiring applicants for F, M, and J visas to make their social media accounts public.

Sani’s remarks have reignited discussions on migration, national identity, and the treatment of African immigrants in Western countries.
