All the cabinet members of Enugu State Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah have publicly affirmed their membership in the All Progressives Congress (APC), ahead of the governor’s anticipated defection from the PDP to APC.
Members of the cabinet who made the declaration include:
-
Dr. Lawrence Eze, Commissioner for Innovation, Science, and Technology
-
Prince of Mburumbu
-
Dr. Amaka S. Ngene, Chairman of the Science, Technical & Vocational Schools Management Board
-
Dr. Felix Nnamani, Commissioner for Labour and Employment
In a video circulated on social media, the cabinet members were heard declaring:
“We are in the APC now, Jagaban all the way, APC from bottom to top.”
This move comes in the wake of the APC National Working Committee (NWC) dissolving the Enugu State Working Committee (SWC)—citing unresolved internal disagreements—and appointing a seven-member caretaker committee to manage party affairs in the state.
The trend of defections from opposition parties to the APC has intensified recently. Notably:
-
Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom state and Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State defected from the PDP to the APC earlier this year.
-
At their defection ceremonies, former APC National Chairman Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje hinted that more governors and party leaders were preparing to cross over to the ruling party.
-
On October 8, Senator Kelvin Chukwu of Enugu East announced his defection from the Labour Party (LP) to the APC, raising the APC’s membership in the Senate to 73—a two-thirds majority in the 109-member chamber. This majority gives the APC the numeric strength to pass key legislation without significant opposition.
The wave of defections has sparked criticism from some quarters, with detractors warning that Nigeria may be heading toward one-party dominance. However, government officials defend the trend as a legitimate expression of democratic realignment and political freedom.
