Nigeria-Japan Collaboration Targets Cybercrime

Meanwhile, the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) and the National Police Agency of Japan (NPA) have strengthened their partnership to combat cybercrime, particularly fraud targeting Japanese victims from Nigeria.

At a press briefing at the NPF National Cybercrime Centre (NPF-NCCC), authorities detailed a major operation that led to the arrest of 11 cybercriminals involved in identity theft, romance scams, and financial fraud.

Key Developments in the Cybercrime Crackdown

  • On April 3, 2024, the NPF-NCCC, Nigeria’s National Central Bureau, and NCB Tokyo launched an investigation into five cybercrime cases linked to 13 Nigerian fraudsters.
  • The suspects used Instagram and other social media platforms to lure victims into fraudulent relationships, convincing them to send money via wire transfers.
  • The illicit funds were then converted into cryptocurrency and transferred to multiple digital wallets in Nigeria.
  • Investigators have already recovered $33,320, with ongoing efforts to retrieve more stolen funds and dismantle the syndicate.

NPF Reaffirms Commitment to Cybersecurity

The Nigeria Police Force has reiterated its commitment to combating cybercrime and ensuring public safety in both physical and digital spaces. The force is leveraging emerging technologies and international partnerships to track and dismantle fraudulent networks.

With CP Jimoh Moshood’s appointment in Lagos and an intensified crackdown on cybercriminals, Nigeria is taking bold steps to strengthen internal security and international law enforcement cooperation.
