JIGAWA GOVERNMENT DISMISSES SHARI’A COURT JUDGE OVER CORRUPTION ALLEGATIONS

The Jigawa Judicial Service Commission has approved the compulsory retirement of Shari’a Court judge Sadisu Muhammad-Haruna for misconduct.

This decision was announced in a statement issued by the JSC Director of Protocol and Publicity, Mr Abba Wangara, in Dutse on Tuesday, March 3, 2026.

The commission reached the resolution after reviewing a petition and established evidence, finding the judge guilty of corruption and illegal detention.

Investigations revealed that Muhammad-Haruna demanded and collected unauthorised fees from petitioner Abdullahi Hamza — charges not listed in the schedule of court fees under the Jigawa Shari’a Court Civil Procedure Rules (2012).

This act of extortion, followed by the illegal detention of the petitioner, was deemed a gross violation of judicial ethics and an abuse of office.

In January 2025, the commission had dismissed three judicial officers for misconduct, advised three Shari’a Court judges to resign, and reprimanded two others for dereliction of duty.

Those decisions followed reviews of investigation committee reports at the commission’s 178th meeting on January 7.

In one case, two court officials — Higher Registrar Iyal Ibrahim and Principal Registrar Baffa Alhaji — were dismissed for illegally selling two vehicles that were exhibits in a Federal High Court case in Dutse.

In another, Chief Clerical Officer Abdu Aujara was dismissed for withholding N965,000 belonging to a litigant in a recovery case involving Ja’iz Bank at the Chief Magistrates Court in Jahun.

The latest action underscores the commission’s ongoing efforts to enforce judicial accountability and integrity in Jigawa State.
