The Emir of Zuru in Kebbi State, Major General Muhammadu Sani Sami (Rtd.), popularly known as Gomo II, has died.
The royal father passed away in London on Sunday, August 17, 2025, following a brief illness. He was 81 years old.
Born on October 24, 1943, Sani Sami had a distinguished career in the Nigerian Army. He enlisted on December 10, 1962, and trained at the Mons Officer Cadet School, Aldershot, United Kingdom, before being commissioned as an officer on July 25, 1963.
Over the decades, he rose steadily through the ranks, holding several strategic positions. Notably, he served as Commander of the Brigade of Guards during the administration of General Murtala Mohammed and later became Military Governor of Bauchi State following the December 1983 military coup.
After his retirement from active service, Sani Sami returned to his roots, where he was installed as the Emir of Zuru. In his reign, he was widely admired as a disciplined, humble, and devoted custodian of tradition, who worked tirelessly to preserve the cultural heritage of the Zuru Emirate.
The Zuru Emirate Council described him as a symbol of unity and resilience, noting that funeral arrangements would be announced in due course.
