JUST IN: INEC Receives 110 Applications for New Political Parties in Nigeria

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced that it has received applications from 110 associations seeking registration as political parties as of June 23, 2025.

INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, disclosed this on Wednesday during the commission’s second regular consultative meeting with media executives held at its headquarters in Abuja.

According to Yakubu, the commission is carefully reviewing the applications in accordance with relevant legal provisions, as well as its own regulations and guidelines. He noted that all but six of the applications have already been acknowledged, with the remaining ones to be processed before the end of the week.

“As of Monday, June 23, 2025, the Commission has received letters of intent from 110 associations interested in registering as political parties,” he said. “We are processing these requests diligently, in line with the law and our internal procedures. All applications have been acknowledged, except for six received recently, which will be addressed before the end of the week.”

Yakubu emphasized that the Regulations and Guidelines for Political Parties 2022 is publicly accessible on the commission’s website, and advised interested groups to consult the document.

He also revealed that the full list of the 110 associations—including their proposed names, acronyms, addresses, and the names of their interim chairpersons and secretaries—will be made publicly available. “For transparency, the complete list will be uploaded to our website and social media platforms, while hard copies have been provided in your meeting folders,” he added.

Some of the associations listed include:

  • All Democratic Alliance (ADA)
  • Advanced Democratic Alliance (ADA)
  • Peoples Democratic Congress (PDC)
  • Key of Freedom Party (KFP)
  • Absolute Congress (ABC)
  • African Union Congress (AUC)

Yakubu reaffirmed the commission’s commitment to transparency and due process in the registration of new political parties.
