Taraba State Governor Agbu Kefas has suspended his planned defection to the All Progressives Congress indefinitely, citing the recent kidnapping of schoolgirls in Kebbi State.

Kefas said the country is once again facing the harsh reality of insecurity, adding that compassion and solidarity must take precedence over politics. He noted that his administration prioritizes security, education, and the protection of vulnerable citizens, making it necessary to halt all major political activities until the situation receives urgent attention.

“In light of the deeply troubling incident of the kidnapping of innocent schoolgirls in Kebbi State, I have taken the solemn decision to postpone my scheduled declaration and movement to the All Progressives Congress,” he said.
He expressed sympathy for the families of the abducted children and the people of Kebbi State, stating that this is a time for reflection, unity, and collective action.

Kefas urged security agencies to intensify efforts to secure the safe return of the girls and called on Nigerians to remain calm, vigilant, and prayerful. He added that a new date for his political move would be announced after due consultation and when it becomes appropriate.

The governor had earlier announced plans to formally join the APC this week. His defection would add to a growing list of PDP governors who crossed to the ruling party in 2025, including those of Akwa Ibom, Delta, Enugu, and Bayelsa.
Kefas, elected in 2023 with 257,926 votes, would be the latest to break the PDP’s long-standing dominance in Taraba since 1999.
