President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a one-year extension for Bashir Adeniyi, the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), allowing him to remain in office until August 2026.
This was disclosed in a statement issued on Thursday, July 31, 2025, by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy.
Adeniyi’s tenure was originally scheduled to end on August 31, 2025. According to the statement, the extension is intended to enable him to consolidate ongoing reforms and see through critical initiatives aligned with the Tinubu administration’s agenda.
“These initiatives include the modernisation of the Nigeria Customs Service, full implementation of the National Single Window Project, and Nigeria’s commitments under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) agreement,” the statement noted.
President Tinubu commended Adeniyi’s leadership and dedication, expressing confidence that the extension will enhance the Customs Service’s capacity in key areas such as trade facilitation, revenue collection, and national border security.
Adeniyi was first appointed as acting Comptroller-General in June 2023, following the exit of former CG Hameed Ali. His appointment was officially confirmed in October 2023.
