President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will depart Abuja on Tuesday for Lagos to participate in activities marking the 50th anniversary of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), alongside other regional leaders.
The golden jubilee celebrations, which began last month in Accra, will continue in Lagos with a symbolic reenactment of the 1975 founding declaration at the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs (NIIA), Victoria Island.
President Tinubu is scheduled to deliver a keynote address at Eko Hotels and Suites, highlighting ECOWAS’ achievements and progress over the past five decades. He will be joined by General Yakubu Gowon (Rtd), Nigeria’s former Head of State and the only surviving signatory of the original ECOWAS treaty, who will deliver a special address and participate in all commemorative events.
The event will also feature a welcome address by ECOWAS Commission President Dr. Omar Touray, and a 50-year retrospective review by former Minister of External Affairs and current NIIA Chairman, Professor Bolaji Akinyemi. A panel discussion with prominent regional experts will follow.
In addition to the anniversary celebrations, President Tinubu will on Saturday, May 31, commission several major infrastructure projects, including:
- Section I of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway
- The Lekki Deep Sea Port Tax Credit Concrete Road
- Flag-off of Section II of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway
- The 7th Axial Road
The President will also virtually commission key road projects in northern Nigeria, including:
- Kano-Kanwar-Danja-Hadejiya Section II
- Yakasai-Zalli Road
- Kano Northern By-pass
- Zaria-Hunkuyi-Dabai Section I
- Dabai-Kafur-Malumfashi Road
- Malumfashi-Dayi-Yashe-Gidan Mutum Daya Section III
President Tinubu is expected to observe Eid-el-Kabir prayers at the State House Mosque, Dodan Barracks, before returning to Abuja.
The events highlight Nigeria’s central role in regional integration and development, as well as the Tinubu administration’s dual focus on continental diplomacy and transformative infrastructure delivery.
