President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has signed into law the bill establishing the Federal University of Science and Technology, Kabo (FUSTK), officially upgrading the existing Federal Polytechnic, Kabo in Kano State to a full-fledged university.
The President’s letter of assent was read on the floor of the Senate during its sitting on Tuesday, May 27, 2025, presided over by Senate President Godswill Akpabio.
The bill was sponsored by Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin, who represents the Kano North Senatorial District. This development comes shortly after the President approved the establishment of the Federal University of Agriculture and Technology, Okeho, in Oyo State.
Reacting to the development, Senator Barau expressed profound gratitude to President Tinubu for his approval of the bill. In a statement shared via his official handle on Tuesday, he said:
“I am deeply grateful to the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, His Excellency Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, for signing into law the bill converting Federal Polytechnic Kabo into the Federal University of Science and Technology, Kabo, Kano State.”
He noted that the President’s endorsement reflects his commitment to expanding access to higher education and equipping Nigerian youth with the skills required for national development.
“This conversion aligns with global best practices and will empower our large youth population through quality education in science, technology, and innovation. Human capital development is essential for economic growth, and this university will play a critical role in that effort.”
Barau emphasized the importance of preparing Nigerian youth for emerging global fields such as artificial intelligence, robotics, and cybersecurity, noting that FUSTK will serve as a hub for such training.
“I congratulate the management, staff, students, and surrounding communities of Federal Polytechnic Kabo on this remarkable transformation. I urge them to maintain the highest standards of academic excellence as they transition into university status.”
Senator Barau concluded by thanking President Tinubu for his “visionary leadership and unwavering commitment to advancing education and national development.”
“We are sincerely grateful, Your Excellency,” he added.
