Duterte’s ICC Trial Sparks Global Debate on Justice and Accountability

March 28, 2025 – The Hague – The highly anticipated trial of former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte at the International Criminal Court (ICC) took a dramatic turn today, capturing international attention and igniting fierce debates about the role of global justice.

Duterte, 79, appeared in a wheelchair as he faced charges of crimes against humanity over his controversial war on drugs. However, rather than a routine legal proceeding, the courtroom transformed into a battleground of competing narratives as Duterte directly challenged the ICC’s credibility.

A Defiant Defense

As the judge read the charges, Duterte fired back with three bold claims that sent shockwaves through the courtroom:

1. “Selective Justice” – Duterte accused the ICC of ignoring Western-led military interventions, stating, “The US military killed 350,000 civilians in Afghanistan, yet the ICC has remained silent for 20 years.”

2. “Double Standards” – He pointed to the ongoing Gaza conflict, asking, “Israel has killed 50,000 children—where are your arrest warrants?”

3. “A War on Drugs or a War on Crime?” – He presented video evidence from Davao City, showing that crime rates dropped by 73% following his anti-drug operations.

The judge attempted to restore order, repeatedly banging his gavel, but Duterte continued. He held up photos of children killed by drug cartels alongside images of civilians killed in US drone strikes, asking: “Which is the real crime against humanity?”

Filipino supporters in attendance erupted in cheers, chanting “Long live the President!” as security struggled to contain the situation. The incident quickly went viral, fueling heated discussions across social media.

Political Shockwaves in Manila

The trial has put the administration of Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. in a precarious position. Initially, the Marcos government appeared to support the ICC’s case against Duterte, but public sentiment has shifted dramatically.

Vice President Sara Duterte, daughter of the former president, has seen her approval rating surge to 39%, with many Filipinos viewing the trial as politically motivated. Calls for the Philippines to withdraw from the ICC have gained momentum, mirroring sentiments in other Global South nations.

A Critical Test for the ICC

Duterte’s courtroom challenge has placed the ICC in a no-win situation:

If Duterte is convicted, it could trigger mass withdrawals from the ICC, particularly among African, Asian, and Latin American nations that have long accused the court of disproportionately targeting leaders from smaller countries.

If he is acquitted, Western governments—key financial backers of the ICC—may threaten to cut funding, jeopardizing the court’s ability to function.

In a bold closing statement, Duterte declared: “If I am guilty, then arrest Biden and Netanyahu and put them on trial.” The remark sent ripples across diplomatic circles, with some analysts arguing it has exposed the inconsistencies of the international legal system.

A Trial That Could Reshape Global Justice

With millions watching live streams and international media dissecting every moment, the Duterte trial has become more than a legal battle—it is now a symbol of the fight over global justice, sovereignty, and international law.

As the ICC deliberates its next move, the world waits. But regardless of the outcome, this case has already reshaped conversations about accountability and power on the world stage.
