#Kaduna Police Clarify: Accidental Dane Gun Discharge, Not Explosion, Kills 12-Year-Old, Injures Seven

The Kaduna State Police Command has debunked initial reports of an explosion in the Josawa Road area of Abakpa, Kaduna, clarifying that a tragic accident involving a locally-made firearm, commonly known as a dane gun, led to the death of a 12-year-old boy and left seven others injured.

According to a statement issued on Tuesday by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Mansir Hassan, the incident occurred on the morning of Monday, April 22, 2025.

“At about 08:30hrs, the Police received a distress call regarding a suspected blast in the Josawa Road area,” the statement read. “In response, a team led by the Divisional Police Officer of Kawo Division was immediately dispatched to the scene.”

Upon arrival and after conducting a preliminary investigation, the police discovered that what was initially suspected to be an explosion was, in fact, the accidental discharge of a dane gun.

The deceased was identified as 12-year-old Abubakar Muhammed, a resident of Josawa Road. Seven others suffered varying degrees of injuries and are currently receiving medical attention.

Senior security officials, including the Commissioner of Police, Garrison Commander, State Director of the Department of State Services (DSS), and the Chairman of Kaduna North Local Government, visited the scene for a joint assessment.

“Expert findings from the Police Anti-Bomb Squad confirmed that no explosives were involved,” the statement continued. “The incident was caused by an unintentional discharge of a locally made firearm.”

Further investigations are ongoing to determine the exact circumstances behind the discharge.

The Command expressed its condolences to the bereaved family and extended best wishes to the injured victims, assuring the public that updates on the case would be provided as the investigation progresses.
