The Kano State House of Assembly has impeached Deputy Governor Comrade Abdulsalam Aminu Gwarzo.
The decision was taken during plenary on Thursday, March 5, 2026.

Gwarzo’s impeachment stems from his refusal to defect from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) following Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s move to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The development follows days after the Assembly dismissed reports of an impending impeachment, with the Speaker’s spokesperson, Kamaluddeen Sani Shawai, describing such claims as unfounded and misleading on Saturday.

“There is absolutely no basis for these claims. The House has not initiated or is not considering any impeachment process against the deputy governor. The reports are false and should be disregarded by the public,” Shawai had said.

The impeachment marks a significant political fallout in Kano amid shifting party allegiances and tensions within the ruling structure.
