KANO ASSEMBLY WITHDRAWS EX-DEPUTY GOV’S IMPEACHMENT AFTER RESIGNATION

Kano Assembly Drops Impeachment Proceedings Following Gwarzo’s Resignation

The Kano State House of Assembly has formally withdrawn impeachment proceedings against former Deputy Governor Aminu Gwarzo, following his voluntary resignation from office. The announcement came during plenary on Tuesday, after the House resumed from its Sallah recess, with Speaker Jibril Falgore presiding over the session.

According to a statement by the Speaker’s spokesperson, Kamaluddeen Shawai, the House set aside the impeachment process after reading Gwarzo’s resignation letter, dated March 27, 2026. The letter cited Section 306(2) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) and stated:

“I, Aminu Abdulsalam Gwarzo, Deputy Governor of Kano State, hereby tender my voluntary resignation from office, effective 27 March 2026.”

Lawal Dala, the House Majority Leader, told journalists that the withdrawal of impeachment proceedings became necessary following Gwarzo’s exit. He added that any allegations against the former deputy governor would now fall under the jurisdiction of relevant anti-corruption agencies.

“We are not the EFCC or ICPC; we discharge our responsibilities as a legislative body,” Dala said.

Other Developments in the House

A lawmaker representing Kiru Constituency announced his defection from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) to the African Democratic Congress (ADC). The switch, effective March 29, followed consultations with constituents and internal crises within the NNPP.

The House received the audited accounts of local governments for the year ending December 31, 2024. Tukur Muhammad Fagge, Chairman of the Public Accounts Committee, commended members for their support during the review process.

Abdulhamid Abdul Minjibir, Chairman of the Committee on Higher Education, moved a motion to establish the Minjibir College of Education and Legal Studies, aimed at expanding access to tertiary education and decongesting Kano metropolis.

In his welcome address after the four-week Ramadan break, Speaker Falgore congratulated Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf and the people of Kano on successful Ramadan and Eid-el-Fitr celebrations. He urged residents to uphold the values of unity, peaceful coexistence, and discipline learned during the fasting period, emphasizing their importance to the state’s development.
