The Kebbi State Government has distanced itself from the recent attack on the convoy of former Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, insisting neither Governor Nasir Idris nor the All Progressives Congress (APC) played any role in the incident.
Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Ahmad Idris, told Daily Trust that suggestions on social media linking the government to the violence were “false and misleading.”
“The Governor himself has no hand in it. He is innocent. In fact, when the incident happened, he instantly summoned a security meeting headed by the Commissioner of Police to ensure peace was restored. The APC as a party also had no role in the matter,” he said.
According to Idris, the Governor immediately ordered tighter security across the state and set up a committee chaired by the Commissioner of Police to investigate the attack and deliver justice to all parties involved. He also directed that no political party or individual should use sirens or engage in campaigns during this period.
Malami ‘Breached the Law’
The spokesperson further alleged that Malami broke the law by entering Birnin Kebbi with a convoy and sirens, privileges he no longer enjoys as a private citizen, thereby disturbing public peace.
He added that the former AGF’s supporters provoked tensions by chanting slogans in front of the APC office while members inside were observing prayers.
Idris contrasted Malami’s conduct with other dignitaries, such as PDP’s former governorship candidate and Senator Adamu Aliero, who recently paid condolence visits to Kebbi without thugs or convoys.
He appealed for calm, noting that normalcy returned to Birnin Kebbi within hours of the incident.
