Kwara Governor Meets CAN, Confirms Military Deployment to Eruku After Church Attack

Kwara State Governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, has assured Christian leaders that the Nigerian military has now taken full control of Eruku community following Sunday’s attack on the Christ Apostolic Church in Ekiti Local Government Area.

The governor met with officials of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in Ilorin on Wednesday as part of intensified efforts to restore calm after terrorists killed two worshippers and abducted several others during the church service.

Police spokesperson Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi earlier confirmed the deaths, noting that security operatives and local vigilantes engaged the attackers, causing many residents to flee in panic.

In a statement released on the state government’s official Facebook page, Governor AbdulRazaq said both state and federal authorities were working closely to stabilise the area.

“You are not alone. We are making deliberate, coordinated efforts to ensure peace is fully restored,” he told the CAN delegation.

The governor recounted his visit to Eruku on Tuesday, where he went with the Commissioner of Police, the State DSS Director, and other officials. He met the Owa of Eruku, Oba Busari Olarewaju, and addressed the congregation inside the attacked church, reaffirming the government’s commitment to restoring normalcy.

He also condemned another attack on rice farmers in the Bokungi area of Edu Local Government Area, praying for the victims and calling the incidents unacceptable.

According to the government, new security measures have been activated across Kwara South and North, including tighter surveillance around schools and worship centres. This follows an earlier directive that schools in Ifelodun, Ekiti, Irepodun, Isin, and Oke Ero LGAs should temporarily close due to security concerns.

Governor AbdulRazaq further announced the deployment of more security reinforcements statewide.

“With the intervention of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, over 900 additional troops have been sent to Kwara,” he said, urging residents to cooperate with the personnel now stationed in vulnerable communities.

He added that repairs on the Eruku road would soon begin and renewed calls for the dualisation of the Ilorin–Kabba expressway, describing it as key to movement in the North Central region.

The meeting with CAN forms part of wider efforts to prevent further attacks as security agencies intensify operations in border communities affected by recent violence.
