Kwara Schools in Ruins Despite ₦7.8 Billion Education Spending

Despite allocating over ₦7.8 billion to the education sector within the first three quarters of 2025, many public schools in Kwara State remain in deplorable condition, with pupils learning in unsafe and unsanitary environments.

At Gbagba LGEA Primary School in Ilorin West Local Government Area, pupils are forced to sit on bare floors due to a lack of desks and chairs.

Similarly, Tsaragi Universal Basic Education School in Edu Local Government Area is in complete disrepair, with collapsing classrooms, leaking roofs, and a shortage of essential learning materials.

Budget records show that the Ministry of Education and Human Capital Development received ₦52.17 billion in the 2025 budget, but only ₦7.8 billion had been spent as of the third quarter — less than 15 percent of the total allocation.

This has raised concerns among parents and education advocates about poor budget implementation and the government’s commitment to improving learning conditions across public schools.

Comrade Musa Tsaragi, Kwara State Coordinator of the Take-It-Back Movement, criticized the government for neglecting public education infrastructure. He noted that despite a recent visit by the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) chairman to the Tsaragi school, no rehabilitation work has begun.

He lamented that pupils continue to learn under harsh and unsafe conditions and urged the government to urgently prioritize the reconstruction of public schools.

Comrade Musa also accused the contractor handling the school’s renovation of abandoning the project midway, warning that his group would reveal the company’s identity if the neglect persists.

Parents and community leaders expressed disappointment over the continued decay of public education infrastructure, accusing the state government of focusing on figures rather than tangible development.

They called for transparency in budget spending and immediate intervention to restore safe and functional learning environments for pupils across Kwara State.Headline news
