Lagos Aims to Become Africa’s Climate Capital

The Lagos State Government is intensifying efforts to establish Lagos as Africa’s climate capital, transforming environmental challenges into opportunities for economic growth, innovation, and sustainability. This vision was highlighted ahead of the 11th Lagos State International Climate Change Summit, a platform showcasing the state’s leadership in climate action and urban resilience.

At a media briefing in Eko Atlantic, Victoria Island, Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources Tokunbo Wahab outlined investments in coastal defenses, flood control, renewable energy, and circular economy models as blueprints for African cities. “Africa is not waiting to be rescued. We are ready to lead,” Wahab stated, emphasizing Lagos’ role as a resilient, innovative megacity.

The summit will feature the Lagos Climate Resilience Policy, Nigeria’s only state-level climate policy, focusing on mitigation and adaptation strategies. Expected to draw over 1,200 delegates, including global CEOs, investors, and scientists, the event themed “Financing the Future of Resilience in Africa” aims to foster actionable climate projects.

Wahab highlighted past summit outcomes, like the creation of LASPARK for urban greening, and thanked partners like Eko Atlantic and NIMASA for supporting sustainable development. NIMASA’s Deputy Director, Tuti Hebron, praised Lagos’ initiatives and highlighted their National Policy on Blue Economy for sustainable marine resource management, urging other states to invest in coastal tourism and innovation.
