Lagos Begins Compensation Payments for Oworonsoki Demolition

The Lagos State Urban Renewal Agency (LASURA) has started compensating verified residents of Oworonsoki, Kosofe Local Government Area, whose homes were demolished in recent clearance operations. The payments began on October 23 at the palace of the traditional ruler of Oworonshoki, attended by community leaders, LASURA officials, and representatives from the Lagos State Building Control Agency.

LASURA Director General Oladimeji Animashaun reported that 80 residents received cheques over two days, fulfilling Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s commitment. Compensation amounts, ranging from N3 million to N5 million for properties and less for makeshift structures, were determined by property type. Animashaun emphasized that the area was declared a regeneration zone over five years ago, with residents notified in advance, refuting claims of inadequate notice.

The regeneration project aims to transform Oworonsoki into a modern, livable community with improved housing, drainage, water, and roads. Hon. Okanlawon Sanni, representing Kosofe Constituency I, praised the initiative as a compassionate approach to urban renewal, ensuring transparency and dignity. He urged residents to cooperate, highlighting the goal of creating a safer, more comfortable community.

Beneficiaries Chioma Idoko and Taiwo Solola, who each received N200,000, expressed gratitude, noting the compensation was a fair gesture.
