Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, a Scam — Babachir Lawal

Babachir Lawal Labels Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway a “Scam,” Criticizes Tinubu Administration

Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Babachir Lawal, has slammed the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway project, describing it as a “scam” and accusing President Bola Tinubu’s administration of failing to deliver meaningful infrastructure to Nigerians.

Speaking on Inside Sources with Laolu Akande, aired Friday on Channels Television, Lawal said the current administration lacks visible and impactful projects across the country.

“If you ask me what projects this government has implemented that are visible and impactful to Nigerians, I can’t name any,” Lawal stated. “In the North, where I travel frequently, I don’t see any road being constructed or rehabilitated. The same goes for the South-West.”

He also took aim at the long-running Lagos-Ibadan Expressway project, accusing successive governments of using it for political gains without completing it.

They are still talking about the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway — a project every government mentions and allocates funds to, but it never seems to progress,” he added.

Lawal was especially critical of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, a flagship project of the Tinubu administration, claiming it was doomed from the start.

Every Nigerian knew it was a scam before it even began, and now it has proven to be exactly that,” he asserted.

President Tinubu had in May inaugurated the first phase of the project — a 30-kilometre stretch from Ahmadu Bello Way to Eleko Village in Lekki, Lagos — as part of the larger 700-kilometre coastal road plan.

However, Lawal dismissed the milestone as insignificant given the nation’s rising debt burden.

“We borrow money from Europe, but before the funds even reach Nigeria, much of it is spent abroad. What exactly can Nigerians point to as a benefit?”

“It has gotten to a point where the President commissions just 30 kilometres of a 700km road, and even that is mired in controversy. So where is our money going?” he questioned.
