On October 18, 2025, the Igbo Speaking Community in Lagos State issued a directive prohibiting the use of titles like “Royal Highness” and “Royal Majesty” by its traditional leaders, aiming to enforce discipline and constitutional order.
Following an emergency meeting of the Board of Trustees (BoT) and executive council, the community, led by BoT Chairman Chief Jonathan Nnaji and President Chief Sunday Ude, declared Eze Ndigbo as the only constitutionally recognized traditional title.
The group condemned the rise of self-proclaimed titles like “Obi of Lagos,” calling them misleading and disruptive to harmony with the Lagos State Government and host communities. Violators face disciplinary action for breaching the community’s constitution. The leadership urged Igbo residents to remain law-abiding, promote unity, and verify property ownership to comply with state regulations, emphasizing peaceful coexistence and responsible conduct in Lagos.
