LAGOS RECORDS MAJOR DECLINE IN CRIME IN ONE YEAR – POLICE

The Lagos State Police has recorded a marked reduction in major criminal activities across the state in the past year, thanks to intelligence-led policing, closer community collaboration, and strengthened operational capacity.

Commissioner of Police, Olohundare Jimoh, revealed the progress on Tuesday during a briefing at the Lagos State Police Command headquarters in Ikeja. The report covered security performance from February 18, 2025, to February 17, 2026.

Jimoh noted that internal security remained stable throughout the year, with public demonstrations managed effectively to ensure safety for both participants and celebrants, avoiding any violent escalation.

He highlighted the protection of critical infrastructure, including the Third Mainland Bridge, with potential threats swiftly addressed using minimal force.

The commissioner also pointed to a decline in cult-related violence, noting improvements in previously volatile areas such as Oshodi, Ketu, Mushin, and parts of Lagos Island. Several high-profile suspects were arrested, including a gang leader who had been under police surveillance for nearly two decades.

Regarding vehicle-related crimes, over 150 stolen vehicles were recovered, with specialised anti-car theft units now established across all area commands to tackle the problem.

Security coverage was further strengthened as tactical units expanded from 23 to 35, enhancing police presence in all local government areas. Intelligence gathering and surveillance played a pivotal role in preventing opportunistic crimes.

Jimoh also introduced the Eko Strike Force to operate alongside the Rapid Response Squad (RRS), supported by the Lagos State Security Trust Fund. He emphasized that technology-driven policing and community engagement have been crucial in improving response times and fostering public trust.

The police command successfully secured multiple high-profile national and international events attended by government officials and foreign dignitaries during the period.

Describing Lagos as one of the safest states in Nigeria despite its large population and bustling commercial activity, Jimoh reiterated the commitment to making the state a benchmark for security and public safety.

He acknowledged support from the Lagos State Governor for enhancing operational capacity and noted that additional patrol vehicles have further improved police visibility and response.

The commissioner also described Lagos’ security control centres as world-class facilities essential for monitoring activities across the state, supported by monthly operational allowances for personnel attached to the Marine Police, Federal Highway Patrol, and control room units.
