Former Senate President Ahmad Lawan has called on opposition parties to put aside political differences and support the reform agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, stressing that national interest must come first.
Lawan made the appeal in a statement issued in Abuja through his media adviser, Ezrel Tabiowo, following a meeting with a delegation of the Yobe State chapter of the City Boy Movement at the National Assembly Complex.
Drawing from his 16 years in opposition, the lawmaker urged critics to support policies that are beneficial to Nigerians, regardless of party affiliation.

“Even if you don’t believe in what the APC is doing, if you see us doing something for the betterment of Nigeria, please support us and give us the credit,” he said.
He noted that Nigeria is at a critical stage of development and requires collective efforts across party lines to achieve meaningful progress.
“We are at a very critical point of development as a country; when we are doing the right things, the opposition should be kind enough to support the administration,” Lawan added.
The former Senate President described Tinubu’s leadership as bold and courageous, saying some of the administration’s reforms, though difficult, are necessary to reposition the country for long-term growth.
He also highlighted efforts in the security sector, including the signing of the Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria Bill, ongoing restructuring of the security architecture, and improved welfare packages for military personnel.

On education, Lawan expressed concern over the high number of out-of-school children, particularly in Northern Nigeria, urging privileged youths to promote access to basic education. He stressed that investing in education would help address insecurity and improve national development.
He further emphasised the need for strict implementation of the Universal Basic Education Act, noting that proper funding remains essential to expanding access to education.
Lawan also commended Yobe State Governor Mai Mala Buni for declaring a state of emergency on education and investing in the sector, urging stakeholders to sustain unity for the state’s progress.
Meanwhile, leader of the delegation, Dr. Muhammad Yakubu Hassan, outlined the activities of the City Boy Movement, including grassroots mobilisation, empowerment programmes, and initiatives such as “Education for All” and “Health for All” aimed at improving community welfare.
