The presidency has dismissed speculations suggesting that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu plans to remain in power indefinitely.
In a statement issued late Sunday, Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy described recent comments by former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, as “baseless” and “absurd.”
El-Rufai had alleged that the President intended to become a “life president” after the 2027 elections. But the presidency insisted that Tinubu is a democrat with no plan to remain in office beyond May 28, 2031, if re-elected.
“Former Governor El-Rufai appears unsettled by the massive support the President continues to enjoy, particularly in the North,” the statement read. “Reports of the grand reception President Tinubu received in Kaduna last Friday clearly contradicted the narrative that the region has abandoned him.”
The statement further noted that the allegations were an attempt to discredit the President ahead of 2027, stressing that the plot “is doomed to fail.”
The presidency added that Governor Uba Sani might need to reach out to his predecessor, suggesting El-Rufai could “benefit from some professional counselling” to avoid further “hallucinations and political fabrications.”
