Liverpool manager Arne Slot has confirmed that the club’s owners, Fenway Sports Group, will pay the remaining two years of Diogo Jota’s contract in full to his family. The 28-year-old Portugal striker died in a car crash alongside his brother André Silva on July 3, 2025, just 11 days after marrying his long-term partner, Rute Cardoso, leaving behind three children.
Speaking to TNT Sports, Slot praised the decision, noting it’s not common in football: “The way the owners handled this by paying his wife and children all the money from the contract—maybe people think it’s normal, but it is not.” Jota’s contract was set to run until the end of the 2026-27 season.
Slot also lauded Liverpool fans for their heartfelt response, citing the outpouring of flowers and memorials. “I can almost get emotional thinking about it,” he said, commending the players’ conduct around the funeral. He reflected on the challenge of moving forward, saying, “It sounds so hard, but our life continues,” while expressing empathy for Jota’s grieving family.
