A man has taken to social media to express his distress after he was allegedly denied entry into a supermarket at Emirate Mall in Ilorin, Kwara State, because of his daughter’s disability.
In a now-viral video posted on TikTok, the visibly emotional father recounted how he had gone shopping with his daughter but was turned away by a security officer without any clear explanation.
“I’m very disappointed. I took my baby here for shopping, but it’s so sad that the security officer sent us out because of my baby,” he lamented in the video.
According to him, the security guard appeared to discriminate against them due to the child’s condition. However, in a follow-up update, the man confirmed that the mall’s Chief Security Officer later intervened and allowed them access.
The video has sparked widespread reactions online, with many condemning the initial treatment and showing support for the man and his daughter.
Some of the comments include:
- Oluwafisayomi 💋💋: “She looks peaceful, why are they being mean to her? It’s really sad.”
- Abiola Sunday Adeoye: “The fact still remains that you never gave up on your daughter. I’m proud of you. May God bless you.”
- Pokz: “But there’s nothing wrong with the baby… or am I not seeing clearly?”
- Timmynaija HairDynasty: “This breaks my heart. It’s why I’m thinking of starting a center for children with special needs. May the universe bless me financially to do so.”
- Thesheyifunmi: “This is just plain wrong. No one should be treated differently because of a child’s condition. We need more awareness about disabilities in our society.”
However, the video also drew mixed reactions, with some questioning the father’s intentions or methods:
- Blizzyscorner: “To me, the father didn’t need to carry her like that—there’s a better way he could’ve held her to avoid scaring people.”
- Ajoksbaby🌸🌼: “I don’t trust this man. He chases clout with the girl on TikTok. His page is often taken down.”
Despite the divided opinions, the incident has reignited conversations about the need for disability awareness, empathy, and proper staff training in public spaces.
