###MANY FEARED DEAD AS GUNMEN ATTACK ANAMBRA COMMUNITY

A yet-to-be-confirmed number of people were feared dead after unknown gunmen attacked the Afor Market Junction in Nawfia community, Njikoka Local Government Area of Anambra State on Sunday.

Residents described scenes of panic and chaos as the assailants reportedly opened fire on unsuspecting members of the community, leaving some injured and others fleeing for safety.

One local source said, “The armed men stormed Afor Market Junction and immediately began shooting, killing many people. No one knows why this attack happened; the whole community is in shock.”

Other residents expressed disbelief and called for a stronger security presence to prevent future attacks.

An eyewitness recounted, “It was utter chaos. The attackers appeared suddenly, in a commando-style operation, and fired indiscriminately.”

Authorities have launched an investigation, and police are working to identify and apprehend the attackers. Video footage circulating online showed terrified residents fleeing while several bodies lay on the ground.

Chief Daniel Okoye, President General of the Nawfia Progressive Union, confirmed the incident in a press statement, saying security agencies had already been contacted and investigations were ongoing.

He said, “I received with deep shock the tragic news of an attack at Afor Market Junction. Multiple people were injured or killed in this senseless act of violence. I condemn this attack and have contacted security agencies to uncover those responsible. I urge all Ndi Nawfia to remain calm, vigilant, and cooperate with authorities. My thoughts and prayers are with the affected families, and we are committed to supporting efforts to maintain peace and safety in our community.”

The Anambra State Police Command spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, could not be reached for confirmation. However, a police source, speaking on condition of anonymity, said, “An investigation is underway, and the police are determined to bring the perpetrators to justice. We strongly condemn this act of violence.”
