Several passengers were injured on Monday, March 16, 2026, when a train traveling from Abuja to Kaduna derailed after colliding with another train along the track. The incident occurred during the busy early morning commute, causing panic among commuters.
Passengers on board described a “sudden and violent jolt” as the train ground to a halt. “We were moving at a steady pace when there was a loud bang and the train suddenly braked,” one passenger shared on social media. “We later realized we had hit another train on the same track. Everyone is shaken, but we are waiting for official word.”
Sada Malumfashi, another passenger, reported, “Passengers got hit and most are bleeding and severely injured. Train delayed for some 30 minutes before resuming to Kubwa. No communication from NRC on anything.”
A video circulating online shows the derailed train with visible dents on the carriages, highlighting the severity of the impact.
Kayode Opeifa, Managing Director of the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC), confirmed the derailment near Asham and stated that no fatalities had been recorded. Injured passengers were transported back to Idu Train Station for medical attention.
Opeifa said an investigation has been launched to determine the cause of the collision and urged commuters to remain calm as the inquiry continues.
