Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, has stepped down from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s cabinet to pursue his ambition of becoming the next governor of Bauchi State in the 2027 elections.
The resignation was confirmed on Monday by the ministry’s spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa, who said Tuggar submitted his letter to the President shortly after noon. He is expected to contest under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

His decision follows a directive issued earlier in March by the President, mandating all political appointees interested in contesting elective positions to resign on or before March 31, 2026.
The order, conveyed through the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, applies to ministers, advisers, assistants, and heads of federal agencies. It is in line with the provisions of the Electoral Act, 2026, aimed at preventing conflicts of interest as the country prepares for the 2027 general elections.
According to the directive, affected officials are required to formally step down within the stipulated timeline to allow for a fair and transparent political process.
President Tinubu emphasised that the move is necessary to strengthen democratic practices, ensure compliance with electoral laws, and create a level playing field for all aspirants ahead of the elections.
