NAFDAC Seals Chinese Supermarkets and Cosmetics Shops for Selling Unregistered Products

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has sealed two Chinese supermarkets in Abuja’s Jabi District and eight cosmetics outlets at Wuse Market for distributing unregistered and banned products.

In a statement by Deputy Director of Public Relations/Protocol, Adegboyega Osiyemi, NAFDAC revealed that the enforcement, directed by Director-General Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, led to the seizure of offending items valued at over N170 million. The raids were conducted by the agency’s Investigation and Enforcement Directorate alongside the Federal Task Force on Counterfeit and Substandard Medicines and Unwholesome Processed Foods, under Assistant Chief Regulatory Officer Musa Embugushiki.

The supermarkets on Mike Akhigbe Way and Ebitu Ukiwe Street were closed after consumer complaints and routine surveillance uncovered sales of unregistered food products, many labeled solely in Chinese breaching NAFDAC’s requirement for English translations in Nigeria. Operators resisted initially, with one claiming it wasn’t yet open, but inspections confirmed both were active.

Separately, the Wuse Market shops were shut for peddling expired, banned, and unregistered cosmetics, aphrodisiacs, and aesthetic drugs. Probes showed impostors posing as dermatologists and pharmacists were dispensing dangerous items for body enhancement, skin lightening, women’s aesthetics, and men’s performance boosts.

Confiscated products included Wenicks Capsules, Maxman Capsules, Boobs Enlargement supplements, Curvy Weight Gain pills, Skin Whitening Vitamin Gummies, Collagen, Royal Jelly, Glutathione, and Whitening Gummies.
