#NAFDAC Warns Nigerians About Counterfeit Amoxycillin in Circulation

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has issued an urgent alert regarding counterfeit Deekins Amoxycillin 500mg capsules, linked to severe adverse effects among users.

The affected product is from batch number 4C639001, with a manufacturing date of March 2024 and an expiry date of February 2027. NAFDAC has recalled this batch and urged the public to cease its use immediately.

At a press briefing in Abuja, NAFDAC’s Director-General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, emphasized the gravity of the issue, announcing plans to escalate it to the World Health Organization’s (WHO) Global Surveillance and Monitoring System. This measure reflects concerns that the counterfeit drugs may have spread beyond Nigeria.

The agency has begun laboratory testing on samples from the suspicious batch and is working with stakeholders, including Quality Control and Production Managers, to trace the origins of the fake product. “We are closely monitoring the situation, and our analysis is ongoing,” Prof. Adeyeye stated. She also noted that the Pharmacy Council of Nigeria and the pharmacist responsible for the batch have been notified.

Prof. Adeyeye reassured Nigerians of NAFDAC’s commitment to safeguarding public health through stringent monitoring and regulatory practices. She urged consumers to stop using the affected batch and advised healthcare providers to procure medications only from verified and legitimate sources to avoid counterfeit risks.

NAFDAC remains dedicated to a thorough investigation and collaboration with relevant authorities to protect public health.
