The Joint Committee of the National Assembly on the Army has approved a proposed budget of ₦1.504 trillion for the Nigerian Army for the 2026 financial year.
During the budget defence session held in Abuja with the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, lawmakers also gave assurances that they would push for the timely release of all funds approved in the appropriation to ensure smooth execution of the Army’s plans.

Speaking after the meeting, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Army, Senator Abdulaziz Yar’Adua, explained that members of both the Senate and House of Representatives jointly examined the 2026 estimates. He noted that lawmakers were satisfied with the Army’s presentation and overall budget proposal.

However, he pointed out that delays in fund disbursement were unanimously highlighted as a recurring issue affecting not only the Nigerian Army but several other government institutions. He stressed that such delays often hinder effective implementation of approved budgets.

Despite the challenge, Yar’Adua reaffirmed the committee’s commitment to working closely with the military leadership, emphasising that the Army remains central to Nigeria’s security and stability and would continue to receive strong legislative support.

Also speaking, Chairman of the House Committee on Army, Hon. Aminu Balele, commended the Chief of Army Staff, officers, and soldiers for their dedication and patriotism, particularly in the fight against insurgency and the defence of Nigeria’s territorial integrity.

He assured that the House committee would persist in advocating for the prompt release of funds to enable the Army to carry out its constitutional responsibilities efficiently. Balele further pledged that the committee would maintain rigorous oversight in line with accountability standards.
He also thanked Senator Yar’Adua and other lawmakers for their collaboration, describing the oversight of the Army as a critical national duty, while once again praising the military leadership for their service.
