NDLEA Sniffer Dogs Key to Major Drug Seizures

The Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, Brigadier General Mohamed Marwa (retd.), announced that the agency’s sniffer dogs have played a crucial role in seizing over 17.9 metric tonnes of illicit drugs since their deployment. Speaking at the opening of a new canine facility in Ikeja, Lagos, funded by the German government, Marwa emphasized the dogs’ vital role in detecting hidden narcotics at airports, seaports, land borders, courier centers, and bus stations using their acute sense of smell.

Marwa explained that the NDLEA Canine Unit’s outdated infrastructure had previously hindered its effectiveness. The German government, through the Liaison Office of the German Federal Criminal Police, supported the construction of the modern facility, which began in August 2024 and was completed on time. He praised the German government, Consul General Daniel Krull, and personnel in Berlin, Saxony, and Sachsen-Anhalt for their contributions.

Krull noted that the NDLEA’s achievements not only enhance safety in Nigeria but also benefit Germany. The new facility strengthens the partnership between NDLEA and the German government, boosting the agency’s efforts to combat drug trafficking.
