‘Nigeria Is Not a Disgraced Country’: Shehu Sani Fires Back at Trump Over Military Threat

Former Kaduna Central senator, Shehu Sani, has condemned the recent remarks by U.S. President Donald Trump, who threatened military action against Nigeria over alleged persecution of Christians

Trump had described Nigeria as a “disgraced country,” sparking outrage across the nation.

Responding via his X handle, Sani strongly rejected the threat, declaring that Nigeria “will never be a disgraced country” and that its sovereignty must remain intact.

“I want history to record me among those who outrightly opposed, rejected, and unreservedly condemned any act of Mr. Trump’s foreign military aggression against my country under any guise or excuse,” Sani wrote.

He urged Nigerians to stand firm in defense of their nation, saying future generations would remember those who spoke up during critical times.

“My country is not a ‘disgraced country’ and will never be one. Anyone proud of his motherland will never accept it being called ‘disgraced,’” he said.

Sani further called on the U.S. government to “look in the mirror,” emphasizing that Nigeria has never colonized, enslaved, or invaded any nation, nor dropped bombs on innocent people.

While acknowledging Nigeria’s ongoing security challenges, he said the country welcomes international support to combat terrorism — but not foreign domination.

He also urged the Nigerian government to intensify efforts to protect citizens, asserting, “This is the only country we can live in without a visa.”

Meanwhile, the Nigerian government has confirmed plans for high-level diplomatic talks with the U.S. to resolve the tensions peacefully.
