Nigeria and Switzerland have moved to deepen their bilateral ties in key areas including trade, economic cooperation, security, migration, skills development, and cultural exchange.
This follows a high-level meeting between Nigeria’s Vice President Kashim Shettima and his Swiss counterpart Ignazio Cassis in Abuja.

Speaking after the discussions, Cassis revealed that both nations are exploring the possibility of a free trade agreement involving Nigeria and the African Continental Free Trade Area, aimed at boosting economic cooperation.
He also highlighted ongoing diplomatic collaboration to address security challenges in Nigeria’s North-East, as well as Switzerland’s continued support for vocational training programmes designed to equip young Nigerians with employable skills.

In addition, both countries are strengthening cooperation in migration management and cultural exchange. A major highlight of the engagement is Switzerland’s commitment to return historical artefacts, including the Benin Bronzes, to Nigeria.

Nigeria’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Yusuf Tuggar, described the planned return of the artefacts as a significant step in enhancing cultural relations between both nations.
The discussions also touched on expanding Swiss investments in Nigeria, with further engagements expected between Swiss officials and private sector stakeholders.

Officials noted that the renewed partnership builds on longstanding diplomatic relations between the two countries, which date back to 1961, with both sides expressing commitment to sustained cooperation on multiple fronts.
