NIGERIAN MILITARY CONFIRMS COUP PLOT AGAINST PRESIDENT TINUBU

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has officially confirmed a coup attempt aimed at overthrowing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s government.

In a statement released on Monday, January 26, 2026, Director of Defence Information, Major General Samaila Uba, provided an update on the matter.

The saga dates back to October 2025, when DHQ announced the arrest of 16 military officers over acts of indiscipline and breaches of service regulations. At the time, reports suggested that the officers—ranging from Captain to Brigadier General—were detained by the Defence Intelligence Agency for allegedly holding secret meetings to topple the government. The publication also linked the cancellation of the October 1 Independence Day parade to the alleged coup plot.

Reacting then, the former Director of Defence Information, Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, described the reports as attempts to create tension and distrust, insisting the matter was strictly disciplinary and handled internally.

“The ongoing investigation involving the sixteen officers is a routine internal process aimed at ensuring discipline and professionalism within the ranks. An investigative panel has been duly constituted, and its findings will be made public,” Gusau had stated.

Update from DHQ

Major General Samaila Uba revealed that a comprehensive investigation has now been concluded following established military procedures. The report indicates that some officers had cases to answer regarding alleged plans to overthrow the government. The findings have been forwarded to the appropriate superior authority for further action.

The DHQ statement read in part:

“The Defence Headquarters issued a press statement in October 2025 regarding the arrest of sixteen officers over acts of indiscipline and breaches of service regulations. Investigations into the matter have been concluded, and the report forwarded to the appropriate superior authority. The comprehensive review has identified a number of officers implicated in plotting against the government, which violates the ethics, values, and professional standards required of the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN).”

Major General Uba confirmed that those indicted will be formally arraigned before military judicial panels in line with the Armed Forces Act and other applicable service regulations. He emphasized that the process would ensure accountability while upholding fairness and due process.
