NIGERIAN POLICE PLACE COMMANDS ON ALERT AS NLC NATIONWIDE PROTEST STARTS WEDNESDAY IN LAGOS, ABUJA

The Nigeria Police Force has placed all state commands and tactical formations nationwide on high alert in anticipation of a planned nationwide protest by the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), SaharaReporters has learned.

In a wireless signal dated December 16, 2025, and tagged “M/IMMEDIATE,” the Force Headquarters in Abuja notified senior police officers across the country that the NLC intends to stage a nationwide protest.

The police signal indicated that the protest is scheduled to begin on Wednesday, December 17, 2025, with Lagos and Abuja identified as the major centres of activity.

Issued by the Department of Operations at the Force Headquarters, the message instructed Commissioners of Police to thoroughly reassess and reinforce their operational plans to effectively and professionally handle protests and any potential civil unrest that may arise.

The directive further ordered all tactical unit commanders to keep their full personnel strength on standby for swift deployment or reinforcement. Commands were also told to station adequate officers at strategic points, including government buildings, public utilities, and other critical infrastructure.

The wireless emphasized the importance of maintaining a visible police presence to discourage criminal elements who might attempt to take advantage of the situation.

In addition, police commands were advised to engage labour leaders, civil society organisations, and other relevant stakeholders within their jurisdictions to promote peaceful conduct during the protest.

Despite the heightened security measures, the message stressed that all deployments must be conducted professionally, in strict compliance with the rules of engagement and with full respect for human rights.

The police also issued a dress directive, stating that all officers are to remain in camouflage uniform until a stand-down order is issued.

The message concluded by instructing all recipients to acknowledge receipt immediately and to treat the directive as urgent.

The planned NLC protest comes amid rising public frustration over economic challenges, with Lagos and Abuja expected to witness the largest demonstrations.
