The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has confirmed another incident of vandalism along the Lagos–Ibadan Standard Gauge Rail Line, specifically between the Agege and Agbado stations.
In a statement issued by Callistus Unyimadu, the Corporation’s Chief Public Relations Officer, the NRC revealed that unknown individuals tampered with key signalling components vital to train operations.
According to the statement, the damaged items included signal machine cap protectors and connection cables belonging to Switch Point Machine No. 2. The discovery was made during a routine inspection carried out on Monday, October 6, 2025.
The NRC condemned the act, describing it as a deliberate attempt to sabotage national infrastructure. The Corporation warned that such criminal behaviour not only disrupts efficient train movement but also poses serious safety risks to both passengers and railway personnel.
Unyimadu stated:
“The vandalised items include the removal of signal machine cap protectors and the cutting of connection cables on Switch Point Machine No. 2. The damage was discovered during a routine inspection on Monday, 6th October 2025.
The Corporation strongly condemns these acts of sabotage against national infrastructure, stressing that such actions not only disrupt smooth train operations but also pose serious safety risks to both passengers and railway staff.”
Despite the attack, the NRC assured that train operations on the Lagos–Ibadan route remain unaffected.
“However, NRC assures the general public that train movement on the Lagos–Ibadan corridor was not obstructed and operations have continued without interruption,” the statement read.
The Corporation further disclosed that security agencies have been informed and are already investigating the matter to identify and apprehend the perpetrators.
Unyimadu concluded by reaffirming the NRC’s commitment to passenger safety and operational reliability, urging communities along railway corridors to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities around railway facilities.
“The Corporation reiterates its unwavering commitment to ensuring the safety and reliability of rail operations nationwide and calls on members of the public, especially communities along railway corridors, to remain vigilant and promptly report any suspicious activities around railway facilities,” he added.
