Nigerian Senate Delays Action on Akpoti-Uduaghan Reinstatement Pending Full Court Documents

The Nigerian Senate has announced it will withhold action on Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan’s case until it receives the Certified True Copy (CTC) of a recent Federal High Court judgment, despite acknowledging the court’s ruling.

Senator Yemi Adaramodu, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Media and Public Affairs, stated in Abuja on Sunday, July 6, 2025, emphasizing that the CTC is crucial for conducting a comprehensive review and determining appropriate next steps.

The Federal High Court in Abuja delivered its judgment on July 4, 2025, in the suit filed by Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan. However, the Senate maintains it has not yet been formally served with the certified copy of the ruling.

“Our legal representatives, who attended the proceedings, have confirmed that the complete judgment was not read in open court,” Adaramodu stated. “Consequently, we have formally applied for the CTC to enable a thorough review and informed determination of the appropriate legal response.”

The Senate expressed particular concern about uncertainty regarding whether the court issued a direct order nullifying Akpoti-Uduaghan’s suspension. According to the statement, since no party has been officially served with the enrolled order of the judgment, none can enforce any perceived order or relief.

“Pending receipt and examination of the CTC, and acting on the advice of counsel, the Senate shall refrain from taking any step that may prejudice its legal position,” the statement concluded.

Adaramodu called for public patience while assuring citizens of the Senate’s commitment to due process as it awaits the court documents to determine its next course of action.
