Nigerians Complain as Cooking Gas Prices Reach ₦1,800 per Kilogram Amid Shortage

The price of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), commonly referred to as cooking gas, has seen a sharp increase across numerous Nigerian cities including Lagos, Ogun, and Ibadan due to a nationwide shortage.

This scarcity followed a three-day strike by oil workers, which interrupted gas supply and distribution throughout the country. States such as Port Harcourt, Cross River, Kano, and Kaduna have also experienced price hikes.

The Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) had initiated the strike last week in protest against the dismissal of several employees at the Dangote Refinery.

Although the strike has been suspended, the temporary disruption caused gas depots to run out of stock, resulting in rationing and steep price increases.

In many areas, cooking gas prices have risen from about ₦1,000 per kilogram to between ₦1,600 and ₦1,800. In Abuja, refilling a 12.5kg cylinder now costs between ₦17,000 and ₦18,750 depending on location. In districts like Wuse, Garki, and Kubwa, LPG is sold at ₦1,350 to ₦1,500 per kilogram, while some Jabi outlets charge around ₦17,000 for a 12.5kg refill.

Retailers report that many outlets ran out of stock by Sunday, and those still selling gas have significantly raised their prices. Similar trends are occurring in Lagos and Ogun States, where prices per kilogram climbed from around ₦1,000–₦1,100 last week to between ₦1,300 and ₦1,800 over the weekend.

The ongoing gas shortage continues to affect households and small businesses across Nigeria, with no immediate relief expected as prices continue to surge.
