Nigeria’s 64th Independence celebrations have officially begun, with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu participating in special Jumat prayers in Abuja.
On Friday, the president joined fellow Muslim faithful at the National Mosque in Abuja for the prayer session, which was part of the scheduled activities marking the nation’s anniversary.
This was confirmed in a statement and video shared on X.com by Dada Olusegun, the Special Assistant to the President on Social Media. The statement read, “As part of the activities for Nigeria’s 64th Independence Anniversary, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu joined other Muslim Faithfuls for a Special Jumat Prayer at the National Mosque, Abuja.”
The accompanying video showed the president being escorted to his seat ahead of the prayers.
It is worth noting that the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, had earlier announced the lineup of events for the Independence celebration in a statement issued on September 19, 2024. He mentioned that the celebrations would be subdued, in keeping with the nation’s current mood.
“The 64th Independence Anniversary celebration will commence with a World Press Conference on Thursday, 26th September 2024, followed by a Juma’at Service on Friday, 27th September 2024; Church Service on Sunday, 29th September 2024; and a Presidential Broadcast and the 64th Independence Day Parade on Tuesday, 1st October 2024,” the statement read.
