Nigeria’s newly appointed Acting Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has pledged continued security support for the country’s maritime sector during a meeting with the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, in Abuja.
Disu assured that the Nigeria Police Force would intensify intelligence-driven policing, routine patrols, and stricter enforcement to curb criminal activities along coastal and inland waterways. He emphasized the Force’s readiness to collaborate with ministries and agencies whose responsibilities relate to national security and economic growth.
The minister highlighted the need for stronger coordination among relevant agencies to enhance safety across Nigeria’s maritime corridors. He noted that the maritime industry has significant potential for economic diversification and employment generation, stressing that improved security is essential to unlocking these opportunities.
Both officials agreed to maintain consistent engagement to ensure effective cooperation.
The Marine Police Command and the Port Authority Police play a key role in safeguarding internal waters, ports, and harbours, working alongside the Nigerian Navy’s offshore operations to promote secure maritime trade and shipping activities.
