NIMASA Strengthens Shipbuilding Capacity With Strategic Inspection At Nigerdock

The Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening the country’s shipbuilding and repair capabilities as part of broader efforts to enhance maritime security and stimulate economic growth.

In a statement released on Sunday, NIMASA disclosed that its Director General, Dr. Dayo Mobereola, recently visited Nigerdock within the Snake Island Integrated Free Zone in Lagos to inspect ongoing maintenance work on the DB Lagos—a special mission vessel used for maritime surveillance and national security operations.

During the inspection, Dr. Mobereola emphasized the agency’s dedication to advancing indigenous maritime infrastructure and ensuring critical vessels are maintained locally. He expressed satisfaction with the progress on the DB Lagos, describing it as a strong indication of Nigeria’s growing capacity in ship repair and construction.

What I’m seeing here today is proof that we possess the technical know-how not just to repair, but also to build vessels in Nigeria,” he stated.

Dr. Mobereola also noted that the initiative aligns with the vision of the Honourable Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, His Excellency Adegboyega Oyetola, who has prioritized the development of local capacity in the maritime sector. “At NIMASA, we are committed to this vision, which is why we are ensuring that our own vessels are maintained within the country,” he added.

The DB Lagos plays a crucial role in national efforts to combat oil theft, smuggling, illegal migration, and other maritime crimes. Its maintenance at a local facility not only boosts operational readiness but also supports the domestic maritime industry.

This development highlights NIMASA’s strategic push to promote indigenous capabilities, bolster maritime security, and foster sustainable growth in Nigeria’s blue economy.
