NMA DECLARES KANU FIT FOR TRIAL, AILMENT NOT LIFE THREATENING.

The Nigeria Medical Association (NMA) panel, appointed by its president, informed the Federal High Court in Abuja that Nnamdi Kanu’s health condition is not life-threatening, deeming him fit to stand trial. This followed a September 26 ruling by Justice James Omotosho, who ordered the NMA to assess Kanu’s health after the IPOB leader claimed deteriorating conditions in DSS custody, citing liver and pancreatic issues, a lump under his armpit, and low potassium levels.

The prosecution, led by Adegboyega Awomolo, opposed Kanu’s request for transfer to the National Hospital, asserting adequate care in detention. The NMA report, filed on October 13 and read in court, confirmed Kanu’s fitness for trial. With no objections from either side, Justice Omotosho scheduled six consecutive trial dates and set October 22 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. for a private meeting between Kanu and his counsel, Kanu Agabi, to avoid DSS eavesdropping.

Kanu, detained since June 2021, faces terrorism charges for his secessionist activities advocating for Biafra. The trial, ongoing since 2015, restarted in 2025 under Omotosho.

The ruling precedes a planned October 20 protest in Abuja, led by activist Omoyele Sowore, demanding Kanu’s release from what organizers call illegal detention.
