Nnamdi Kanu Sues Reno Omokri for ₦60 Billion Over Alleged Defamation, Seeks Apology and Retraction

The detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, has initiated a high-profile defamation lawsuit against prominent political commentator and staunch Tinubu ally, Reno Omokri.

Filed at the Enugu State High Court, the case, described by Kanu’s Special Counsel, Aloy Ejimakor, as “a muscular legal action,” accuses Omokri of publishing “highly defamatory and prejudicial statements” against Kanu and IPOB.

The suit, instituted by Writ of Summons under Order 3, Rule 3 of the Enugu High Court, is titled:

“MAZI NNAMDI KANU (suing for himself and on behalf of the Indigenous People of Biafra) vs. RENO OMOKRI.”

Reliefs Sought:

According to court filings, Kanu is asking for:

  • ₦50 billion in general damages for defamation, emotional distress, reputational harm, and prejudice to ongoing judicial proceedings.

  • ₦10 billion in aggravated damages for what he described as the malicious and reckless publication of false claims by Omokri.

  • A public retraction and apology in two national newspapers and on Omokri’s verified Twitter/X handle within seven days of judgment.

  • A perpetual injunction barring Omokri, his agents or affiliates from making or sharing further defamatory statements against Kanu or IPOB without lawful justification.

  • Full coverage of legal costs and 10% annual interest on awarded sums from the date of judgment until payment is completed.

In the statement of facts, Kanu reaffirmed his identity as a public figure and the leader of IPOB — an organisation advocating for self-determination for the Igbo people in Nigeria.

Counsel Speaks

Reacting to the development on his verified X account, Ejimakor wrote:

“Yesterday, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu commenced a muscular legal action against RENO OMOKRI (@renoomokri), seeking a retraction, apology & damages for Omokri’s highly defamatory & prejudicial publications against Mazi Kanu, IPOB & #Ndigbo. Others like Omokri should take note & be guided.”

The case is expected to draw widespread public and media attention, especially given the personalities involved and the ongoing legal and political discourse surrounding IPOB and its leader.
