Femi Soneye, the Chief Corporate Communications Officer (CCCO) of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), has stepped down from his role, citing the need to focus on family and personal responsibilities.
In a statement released on Saturday, Soneye expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to serve and reflected on his 20-month tenure, during which he helped shape the public image of Nigeria’s state-run oil giant.
“It has been a profound honour to serve both the Company and our country, and to contribute in my own way to the ongoing transformation of NNPC Ltd,” he said.
Soneye thanked the media and the Nigerian public for their support, professionalism, and commitment, which he credited for amplifying NNPC’s evolving story.
“I am deeply grateful for the trust reposed in me, the opportunities granted, and the incredible professionals both within and outside the organization with whom I have worked,” he added. “I remain a steadfast supporter and ambassador of NNPC Ltd wherever I go. I enjoin you, dear colleagues, to continue your robust, balanced, and constructive reportage in support of the Company’s noble mission and strategic role in Nigeria’s energy future.”
Before joining NNPC in 2023, Soneye was a respected newspaper editor and publisher of PerSecondNews, a multimedia news outlet. During his time at NNPC, he worked closely with former Group CEO Mele Kyari and quickly became a favourite among journalists for his promptness in handling media inquiries and crises.
His tenure was marked by a deft handling of high-profile public issues, including fuel distribution disruptions and controversial dealings with private sector entities like the Dangote Group. His professional conduct drew praise from both traditional and social media circles.
NNPC Ltd., which was originally established in 1977 as a government-owned corporation to oversee Nigeria’s oil wealth, transitioned into a limited liability company in 2022 following the enactment of the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA). The company’s strategic leadership is now headed by Bayo Ojulari.
It remains unclear when a successor to Soneye will be announced.
