The Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) has ended its nationwide strike following a successful resolution with the Dangote Group. The decision was reached after a critical meeting in Abuja on Tuesday, breaking days of stalled negotiations.
The strike, launched on Monday, protested alleged anti-union policies by the Dangote Group, particularly its resistance to allowing workers to join NUPENG. NUPENG President Williams Akporeha had described the action as a response to “anti-worker and anti-union practices” aimed at “enslaving” workers.
Despite concerns, the Dangote Group maintained that the strike would not disrupt fuel supply. The resolution, facilitated by intense dialogue involving government officials and key stakeholders, prompted NUPENG to direct its members to resume work immediately.
The agreement averts a potential economic crisis, with support for the strike having come from major labor groups like the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN).
